Original Strongmen Eugen Sandow

The father of modern bodybuilding

Eugen Sandow born Apr 2nd  1867 - Oct 14 1925 originally named Friedrich wilhelm muller was one of the pioneering strongmen and bodybuilders, he is commonly referred to as
The father of modern bodybuilding.

Sandow was born in KönigsbergPrussia in 1867. He left Prussia in 1885 to avoid military service and in 1889 he made his first appearance on the London stage.

Florenz Ziegfeld knew that Maurice Grau had Sandow under a contract. Ziegfeld wanted to display Sandow at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.Grau wanted $1,000 a week. Ziegfeld could not guarantee $1,000 a week but agreed to paying 10 per cent of the gross receipts.

Ziegfeld found that the audience was more fascinated by Sandow's bulging muscles than by the amount of weight he was lifting, so Ziegfeld had Sandow perform poses which he dubbed "muscle display performances"... and the legendary strongman added these displays in addition to performing his feats of strength with barbells. He added chain-around-the-chest breaking and other colorful displays to Sandow's routine. Sandow quickly became Ziegfeld's first star.

In 1894, Sandow featured in a short film by the Edison Studios. The film was of only part of the show and features him flexing his muscles rather than performing any feats of physical strength. While the content of the film reflects the audience attention being primarily focused on his appearance it made use of the unique capacities of the new medium. Film theorists have attributed the appeal being the striking image of a detailed image moving in synchrony, much like the example of the Lumière brothersRepas de bébé where audiences were reportedly more impressed by the movement of trees swaying in the background than the events taking place in the foreground. In 1894, he appeared in a short Kinetoscope film that was part of the first commercial motion picture exhibition in history.

He was responsible for the first major bodybuilding contest ever, held at The Royal Albert Hall September 14, 1901 and was called "The Great Competition"
judged by Sandow himself along side Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the athlete and sculptor Sir Charles Lawes.

Sandow died in London on October 14, 1925 of a stroke at age 58.
He was buried in an unmarked grave in Putney Vale Cemetery at the request of his wife, Blanche. In 2002, a gravestone and black marble plaque was added by Sandow admirer and author Thomas Manly. The inscription (in gold letters) read "Eugen Sandow, 1867-1925 the Father of Bodybuilding." In 2008, the grave was purchased by Chris Davies, Sandow's great-great-grandson.
Manly's items were replaced on the anniversary of Eugen Sandow's birth in 2008 and a new monument, a one and a half ton natural pink sandstone monolith was put in its place. The stone, simply inscribed "SANDOW" (in vertical letters), is a reference to the ancient Greek funerary monuments called steles.

He was befriended by the likes of King George V of the United KingdomThomas Edison and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He was portrayed by the actor Nat Pendleton in the Academy Award winning film The Great Ziegfeld (1936). Sandow was a close friend to classical pianist Martinus Sieveking, featuring him in his book Sandow's System of Physical Training. Sieveking toured with Sandow and lived with him in New York City for a time.
As recognition of his contribution to the sport of bodybuilding, a bronze statue of Sandow sculpted by Frederick Pomeroy has been presented to the winner of the Mr. Olympia contest, the pinnacle of professional bodybuilding competition sponsored by the International Federation of Bodybuilders, since 1977. This statue is simply known as "The Sandow".

Sandow's resemblance to the physiques found on classical Greek and Roman sculpture was no accident, as he measured the statues in museums and helped to develop "The Grecian Ideal" as a formula for the "perfect physique." Sandow built his physique to the exact proportions of his Grecian Ideal, and is considered the father of modern bodybuilding, as one of the first athletes to intentionally develop his musculature to pre-determined dimensions.

In his books Strength and how to obtain it and Sandow's system of physical training Sandow laid out specific prescriptions of weights and repetitions in order to achieve his ideal proportions.

New Blood

Today we have 2 new recruits and we add Canada to our list of member countries,
fresh meat for the Sunday Madness grinder but this grinder doesn't churn out mince it churns out MONSTERS!

So we started with a Sunday Madness favorite the 8 station circuit

  1. Bench vaults
  2. Gym ring row
  3. Renegade push up
  4. Kb swings
  5. Heavy rope waves
  6. Agility ladder runs
  7. Power wheel roll outs
  8. Medicine ball slams
First round 20/15 work to rest ratio then as usual the THING tampered with the timer so we end up doing 30/15 for the next round.

The dreaded interval timer tamperer

Now its time to introduce the new guys to another Sunday Madness favorite the weighted and tethered Bear crawl,

So Steve and Ben dive in head first, 10kg vest plus heavy resistance bands we have a sink or swim approach to training here at Sunday Madness and these lads fit in nicely, and I recon that Steve may have a promising career as a movie stuntman ahead of him! I can see him now being dragged behind a horse in some epic western, he was not alone I went flying when the attachment for the resistance band came open but luckily no one was filming.

Phil and Mehendran are old pro's at the Bear crawl and complete it effortlessly

After only one session these 2 guys are sporting the Sunday Madness demented grin, yes these boys will fit in nicely!

Nine Circles Of Hell

So last week we introduced the Hell climb,
Basically strap weight to the body, carry weight in your hands, and drag weight behind you all at once up a steep hill and destroy yourself! so simple its brilliant.

This week we descend into HELL, nine circle's of HELL! anyone familiar with Dante Alighieri's epic poem The Divine Comedy will know the first part is the account of his descent into hell or the Nine Circles of hell,
Today was just like that, how a group of grown men can gather in the morning to carry heavy shit up and down a steep slope truly is a divine comedy!

And the feelings that you will experience on your descent into Hell, FEAR, LONELINESS, PAIN, SELF DOUBT, STUPIDITY, LOATHING, ANGER, INERTIA, then finally DESPAIR!

These are our Nine Circles

Unfortunately the videos seem to be to long to upload of the main event so I'm posting segments and the THINGS last run up and back down with 252lbs

taking in to account this is roughly his 9th and final trip up the Hell climb this session, I want to have a chat with his parents as I have suspicions that he was not actually born, but found in a meteor crater some where in the Australian bush!

Zaid's final ascent of the Hell climb there was a moment of self doubt at the top but he overcame his demons ignored the pain and the voice in his head telling him to quit and made it back down,

Whilst Zaid and thing move on to 3 full rounds of sparring to get Zaid fight ready Phil Steven and myself continue with a circuit consisting of 3 rounds pull up's, roll out's, med ball slams, and push up's

I may have a slight tendency to over dramatize these events but hey that's the fun right? and it is tough as hell but every one involved had a great time and felt good once it was over,

and trust me when I say we all slept like baby's in coma's

Play Time Is Over!

So enough with the ramping up! time to get training,
the THING came up with a nice sled drag / farmer walk combo a few weeks ago, but if you ask me its missing two ingredients,
a weighted vest and a steep hill!
Welcome to the

 HILLBILLY HELL CLIMB!!!

PREPARE FOR GLORY!

Here is our new playground, not sure what the gradient of this slope is, all I know is it SUCKS! big time, fortunatly for Mehendran and I we are a bit under the weather so are not doing this full on,
I'm a big fan of Dan John's doctrine so expect to see more of these type of heavy carries in future posts they are always one hell of a killer finisher if you want to drain the tank, just make sure you have no plans for the rest of the day!

The THING is up first, ok steep hill  plus 114kg so approx 252lbs of added load, remember with the heat and friction caused by the tyre dragging on the concrete the more the tyre will grab the surface, so the further you get the more fatigued you get the harder it is to drag the sled.

                                          SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!

THING is in the zone he completes
the Hell climb in 48 seconds!

so this weeks quiz, who can guess the first words out off THINGS mouth after completing the Hell climb

1, I hate you Edwards!

2, Too easy!

3, RRAAARGGHHHH!

4, Lets go again

lets see shall we, what are the first words that come to mind after a titanic effort like that

Lets be honest its amazing he spoke at all, this is the first time we have included this in our workout and after 2 rounds of circuit's and 3 rounds of sparring to dive in to this with 252lbs as a finisher the man is a machine, if I attempted this today with that weight I would be a gibbering pile of strained tendons & ligaments halfway up the hill.

Zaid is up next, again another machine straight in at 252lbs of added load what a joy to be young

Mehendran and I take the easy way out with 110lbs 50kg added load which turns out is not that easy, no video of me because I went last and by then no one has the energy to hold the camera let alone follow up the hill

No matter where Sunday Madness is held there
will always be an audience, but this guy
doesn't even offer to help THING look
for his contact lens!

I give the gym rings a trial run

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH!

Enjoy Your Training

So everyone knows at Sunday Madness we like to push ourselves,
if your going to be successful at getting anywhere near your goals  you need to enjoy your workouts!
I see people in gyms all the time mindlessly trudging away doing boring cardio on stationary equipment and Ill say "you don't really look focused!" half the time the response is "yeah I hate cardio but gotta do it right" WRONG! why would you put yourself through 45 minutes to an hour of a mind numbing activity when you could drag a sled or skip rope or do burpees or mountain climbers and send your heart rate through the roof in half that time!
This is why so many people never get close to what they want to achieve, because if you don't enjoy what your doing your going to stop PERIOD!

Find an alternative mode to get the job done think outside the box hell think outside the GYM!

If it's fun your gonna keep it up no matter how challenging and when you beat that challenge make a new one but most of all have fun doing it.

Personally I hate running but this little guy seems to LOVE it

Now that's the face of some one enjoying their workout

If you don't look like a crazed lunatic during or after your workout
you may need to make a few new exercise choices,

Todays Sermon

Today was just too damn Hot!
reduced numbers this week as a few of our crew are traveling,
so only four of us, the heat was ridiculous but we battled through six stations three rounds 40 sec work to 10 sec rest ratio.

  1. Ropes
  2. Power wheel rollout's
  3. Medball slams 6kg
  4. KB rope pull 40kg
  5. Farmers walk 64kg
  6. Renegade press up & row

Then we settled on some medicine ball partner drills and throws.

The thing & I team up for the first drills, (hey wasn't that a movie with Yul Brinner? The Thing & I)

                                      Mehendren & Zaid up next

We usually use these drills to warm up, but today doing them after our circuits with a heavier ball is a real killer of a finishing drill.

simple but very effective

SIT DOWN and wait till we are ready!

I'm so fed up of being told what to do

Not everyone is happy with the exercise selections

As usual THING is only happy when inflicting pain
